Un altfel de editorial despre MJ

În avalanşa de texte despre Mişel Jacson, un editorialist din SUA, Mick LaSalle, a trecut de partea opusă a baricadei şi a scris următoarele:

But then you have a problem. You have to justify all that space and all that broadcast time by saying something other than, "Wow, that was a surprise . . . though on second thought . . . " You have to make the life as big as the story, and that's where hyperbole is bound to set in.

Maybe it's too early to say it, but sooner or later it must be admitted, amid all the adulation and assertions of genius attending Michael Jackson's death, that the man was musically irrelevant for at least the last two decades of his life.

As a child, he definitely had the edge on Donny Osmond. Then in 1979, he released a terrific solo album, OFF THE WALL. Then in the early 80s, he released a great solo album, THRILLER. Then in 1987 came BAD, which had three or four good songs on it. And that was about it.

We're talking about two and a half really good albums, and a handful of Jackson Five tracks of more than nostalgic appeal.

For most of his thirties and all of his forties, Michael Jackson was a major star in Romania and Bulgaria and other parts of Eastern Europe, but his records were no longer selling in the west. He was reduced, in the early 90s, to calling himself "The King of Pop" -- a title of his own invention, both meaningless and overly assertive, pretending at a stature he never attained and a popularity he could not sustain.

Update: By the way, I think I may be falling into the hyperbole by calling THRILLER a great album. It may just be a mix of fantastic and so-so songs -- not sure how that evens out. A few of those songs are essential and evergreen. But do people really listen to THRILLER straight through without skipping any or all of the following? HUMAN NATUURE, BABY BE MINE, LADY IN MY LIFE and THE GIRL IS MINE.

Admit it: You at least skip THE GIRL IS MINE.
